brand entertainment: a bit of a stink?

I was in a meeting last week and someone mentioned they think brand entertainment in this market still has 'a bit of a stink around it'. 

We were talking in the context of television and in a way I think he's right.

What do you think?

Coke has done a poor job with American Idol if you consider that branded content? However Sprint and Suave did a great job with 'In the Motherhood' web series and I'm hopeful that the Television series will live up to it.
